Question 515574: I need assistance with a problem that I am having trouble with.
Determine the nature of the solutions of the equation.
y^2 = 4/5y + 4/7
y^2 - 4/5y -4/7 = 0
a = 1
b = -4/5y
c = -4/7
I am completely lost as to how to work this problem.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Christine Fitzgerald

Answer by Alan3354(69443)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Determine the nature of the solutions of the equation.
y^2 = 4/5y + 4/7
y^2 - 4/5y -4/7 = 0
a = 1
b = -4/5
c = -4/7
---------
Find the determinant, Det = b^2 - 4ac
Get rid of fractions first, multiply by 35
y^2 - 4/5y -4/7 = 0
35y^2 - 28y - 20 = 0
Det = 28^2 - 4*35*(-20) = 784 + 2800 = 3584
Det > 0 --> 2 real solutions
