Question 330021: twice the sum of jim's and tom's ages is equal to eight times the difference of their ages and five years ago jim was twice as old as tom was. how old is tom now? please show your work.
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let jim be x
tom be y
..
2(x+y)=8(x-y)
Their ages 5 years ago
x-5 & y-5
x-5=2*(y-5)
.......
2(x+y)=8(x-y)
2x+2y=8x-8y
6x-6y=0
x-y=0..................1
..
x-5=2(y-5)
x-5=2y-10
2y-x=-5+10
2y-x=5................2
Add equation 1 & 2
x-y+2y-x=5
y=5 Tom's age
so x=5 years - Jim' age
