The correct problem should be something like this:
{[(x^2-2x-3)/(x+1)]divided by [(x^2+x-12)/(x^2)]}-1

{[(x^2-2x-3)/(x+1)]divided by [(x^2+x-12)/(x^2)]}-1
= {[(x-3)(x+1)/(x+1)]divided by [(x+4)(x-3)/(x^2)]}-1
={[(x-3)]divided by [(x+4)(x-3)/(x^2)]}-1 (cancelling (x+1)
={[(x-3)]mulitplied by[(x^2)/(x+4)(x-3)]}-1
(if the division sign is changed into multiplication symbol then then the fraction after the division sign is reciprocated)
={[(x-3)]X[(x^2)/(x+4)(x-3)]}-1
={[(x-3)(x^2)/(x+4)(x-3)]}-1
=[(x^2)/(x+4)]-1 (cancelling (x-3)
=[(x^2)-1(x+4)]/(x+4)
= (x^2-x-4)/(x+4)

First off, being picky, this is not an equation, since there is no equals sign. All you can do is just simplify the expression, so that is what i shall do :-)

I am assuming a few things, as i am not sure, from your question:
1. the final -1 is not a power
2. the final -1 is on the denominator
3. as you have written it, the equation is still dubiously written as it looks like
