A high school class wants to raise money by recycling newspapers. The class decided to rent a truck at a cost of $150 for the week. The market price for recycled newspapers is $15 per ton. Write an equation representing the amount of money the class will make based on the number of tons of newspaper collected. Explain what you did to get your answer.

If we let t=number of tons of newspapers, then we can represent the amount of money collected as (in dollars). So for example, if you collect tons of newspapers, then you will make dollars. However, this does NOT factor in the cost of the rental truck. Is there more to this problem? Does it say somewhere how many weeks the truck is rented for?

y=15x-150
For every ton (x) the class receives $15 but has to pay for the truck rental of $150 which is subtracted from the money received for the papers.
No matter how much or how little they gather from newspapers they still have to pay $150 for the truck.
