Answer by College Student(505) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In order to add or substract two fractions, we need to have the same denominator on both fractions. Once that condition exists, we can add or substract their numerators and keep the denominator the same to obtain our result.
.
The question now is what to do when denominators are different. Here are the steps:
a. multiply the denominators to come up with a common denominator.
b. multiply the second denominator by the first numerator. Keep the result as part of the numerator.
c. multiply the first denominator by the second numerator. Keep the result as part of the numerator.
d. workout the multiplications
e. the two numerators will be added or substracted depending on the mathematical operation in between the fractions.
f. simplify statement

Problem:
Step a:
<-- I'm just showing the denominator by itself to avoid confusion with the numerators.
Step b:
<-- numerator
Step c:
<-- numerator
* When you're done writing the statement down, it should look like this:
Let's workout the multiplications:
... if we organize them by like terms, it's easier to add or substract them.
You may choose not to write down this next step, but I'll type it to show my work.
7a-7a+0 ...so they're now gone from the statement.
