x + 3y + z = 4
2x+ 5y -4z = 24

Multiply the 1st two equations by -1 to change the signs
-x - 2y +6z = -23
-x - 3y - z = -4
2x + 5y -4z = 24
---------------------addition eliminates x and y, find z
0x + 0y + z = -3
z = -3

replace z with -3 in the 1st two equations
x + 2y -6(-3)=23
x + 3y - 3 = 4

x + 2y +18 = 23
x + 3y -3 = 4
