 What is the equation of the line in slope-intercept form that passes through (12,0) and is parallel to y=-1/2x-3?
.
For our line to be "parallel" to
y=-1/2x-3
it MUST have the same slope.
.
Because
y=-1/2x-3
is in "slope-intercept" form:
y = mx + b
where m is the slope
we see that our new line MUST have a slope of -1/2
.
So, now we know our line must have
slope (m) = -1/2
and passes thru (12,0)
.
Plug the above into the "point-slope" form:
y - y1 = m(x - x1)
y - 0 = (-1/2)(x - 12)
y - 0 = (-1/2)x + 6
y = (-1/2)x + 6  (this is what they're looking for)
