Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
find the least common denominator
2.......3
----- -----
x-3 2x+3
---------------------------------------------
The least common denominator is the smallestini algebraic
expression into which the various denominators can be evenly
divided.
----------------
For example if you have 1/2 + 2/5, the lcd is 2*5 = 10
------------
The lcd of 1/20 + 1/16 you have to see the factors of 20 and of 16:
20 = 2^2*5
16 = 2^4
-------------
The lcd must have each of these different factors to there
highest power.
The lcd is 5*2^4 = 5*16 = 80
-----------------------------------
So with algebraic expressions
The lcd of x^2-9 and x^2+5x+6 = ?
Factor each one:
x^2 - 9 = (x+3)(x-3)
x^2+5x+6 = (x+3)(x+2)
The lcd is (x+2)(x+3)(x-3)
------------------------------
Using Google you may be able to see more examples of lcd problems.
