in 1 hour E. picks 40/11 bushels and Jasmine picks 5.
in x hours (40x/11)+5x=50
(95/11)x=50
multiply by 11
95x=550
x=5.79 hours

It takes Eugene 11 hours to pick 40 bushels of apples. Jasmine can pick the same amount in 8 hours. How long would it take them if they worked together 
It's the SAME JOB each is doing, so 40 bushels is considered A JOB, or 1 JOB

Eugene does  of the job in 1 hour, and Jasmine does  of the job in 1 hour

Let time both take, working together, be T

Therefore, we get: 

8T + 11T = 88

19T = 88
