let 1/x=james'work rate
1/8=frank's work rate
1/3=work rate frank and james working together
..
sum of indv. work rates =work rate working together
1/x+1/8=1/3
1/x=1/3-1/8=8/24-3/24=5/24
x=24/5=4.8
