Question 806421: Wendy took a trip from city A to city B, a distance of 450 mi. She traveled part of the way by bus, which arrived at the train station just in time for Wendy to complete her journey by train. The bus averaged 40 mi/h, and the train averaged 95 mi/h. The entire trip took 8 1/2 hr. How long did Wendy spend on the train?
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Bus-----------x miles------------ 40 mph
time by bus = x/40
Train--------(450-x) miles--------95 mph
time by train =(450-x)/95
Total time = 8.5 hours
Time by bus + time by train = 8 .5 hours

x/40 + (450-x)/95 = 8.5
multiply equation by 40*95
95x+40(450-x)=8.5*40*95
95x+18000-40x=8.5*40*95
55x=32300-18000
55x=14300
x=18.260 miles time on bus
Time on train = 450-260=190 miles
time on train = 190/95
2 hours
