a swimming pool can be filled in 9 hours and it can be emptied in 12 hours. in error, the drain pipe was left open while attempting to fill the pool. how long did it take to fill the pool?

By itself, the inlet can fill the pool in 9 hours, so it can fill 
of the pool in 1 hour. Likewise, the drain can empty 
of the pool in 1 hour. Working against one another, the inlet and the drain fill 
of the pool in 1 hour. Do the arithmetic and then take the reciprocal to find the total time.
