1/x=its work rate
let y=hrs pipe 3 can do the job alone
1/y=its work rate
1/4=work rate of pipe 1
sum of individual work rates=work rate when working together
..
1/4+1/x=1/3
1/y+1/x=1/4
subtract
1/4-1/y=1/3-1/4
-1/y=1/3-1/4-1/4=4/12-6/12=-2/12=-1/6
y=6
1/x=1/3-1/4=4/12-3/12=1/12
