You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Joe took 4 hours to fill the pool and Jim took 6 hours to fill the pool. If they filled the pool at the same time how long would it take them?
-------
Joe rate: 1/4 job/hr
Jim rate: 1/6 job/hr
---
Together rate: 1/x job/hr
---
Equation:
rate + rate = together rate
1/4 + 1/6 = 1/x
3x + 2x = 12
5x = 12
x = 2.4 hrs (time to do the job together)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Add their rate of filling
Joe's rate: ( 1 pool ) / ( 4 hrs )
Jim's rate: { 1 pool ) / ( 6 hrs )
----------------------
Let t = time in hours to fill pool with both filling
+1%2F4+%2B+1%2F6+=+1%2Ft+
Multiply both sides by +12t+
+3t+%2B+2t+=+12+
+5t+=+12+
+t+=+2.4+
+.4%2A60+=+24+
Together they fill pool in 2 hrs and 24 min
