I had a problem similar to this in 8th grade algebra. I worked on it over an entire weekend before I figured out how to do it, and all like it.
Has someone showed me how to do it, I would not have had the experience of solving it myself. I think that experience was, at least in part, contributed to my better than average abilities in math, and in figuring things out in general.
