Question 434268: Write the equation and solve by factoring: Working together, Jim and Steve can wash the windows of a building in 6 hours. Working alone, it takes Jim 5 hours longer than Steve to do the job. How long does it take Jim to wash all the windows if he works alone?
Answer by scott8148(6628) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(6/s) + (6/j) = 1
[6/(j-5)] + (6/j) = 1
6j + 6j - 30 = j^2 - 5j
0 = j^2 - 17j + 30
0 = (j - 15)(j - 2)
j - 2 = 0 ___ j = 2 ___ since J takes 5 hrs longer than S, this solution makes no sense
j - 15 = 0 ___ j = 15
