Two pipes are pumping water into a 1200 gallon well. If the first pipe can pump water at the rate of 48 gallons per hour and the second pipe can pump water at the rate of 192 gallons per hour, in how many hours will the well be filled?
.
Let x = time (in hours) to fill well
then
x(48 + 192) = 1200
x(240) = 1200
x = 1200/240
x = 5 hours
