Question 310012: Jay can paint a car in six hours. Mike can paint the same car in 3 hours. If they work together, how long will it take them to paint the car?

I can't figure it out, so if you could please help and tell me how you got the answer I would love to know what to do to figure it out. Please and Thank you.

The first step would be to find the hourly rate at which each person can paint the car.
If Jay can paint the car in six hours, then he can paint of the car in one hour.
If Mike can paint the same car in three hours, then he can paint of the car in one hour.
Working together, they can paint or of the car in one hour.
So, it would take them two hours to paint the entire car.

The other tutor's method worked easily because the answer was a whole number.
This method works alll the time.
x/6+x/3=1
x+2x=6
3x=6
x=2
They can do it in two hours
