Working together, it takes two different sized hoses 20 minutes to fill a small swimming pool. If it takes 30 minutes for the larger hose to fill the swimming pool by itself, how long will it take the smaller hose to fill the pool on its own?
both the hoses fill in 20 minutes
they do 1/20 of the job in 1 minute
bigger hose does 1/30 of the job in 1 minute
so in 1 minute the smaller hose will do 1/20 -1/30 of the job
=30-20 / 600
=10/600 = 1/60
the smaller hose does 1/60 of the job in 1 minute
To do the complete job it will take 60 minutes
The smaller hose will fill in 60 minutes

20/y=10/30
