Question 290751: An empty pool being filled with water at a constant rate takes 8 hours to fill to 3/5 of its capacity. How much more time will it take to finish filling the pool?
The answer is 5 hr and 20 min, but I don't understand why you don't divide 3/5 by 8? Shouldn't we apply the formula Rate = Amount (3/5)/ Time (8)?
Answer by Earlsdon(6294) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Because, when you divide hours, you will have found how long it would take to fill the pool altogether. (13 hrs 20 min)
But the question is "How much more time will it take to finish filling the pool?"
So you want to subtract 8 hours from the 13 hours 20 minutes to get 5 hours 20 minutes to finish filling the pool.
