Question 276453: a man walked diagonally across a square plot. What was the percent saved by not walking along the edges?
Answer by checkley77(12844) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The diagonal distance is 2x^2=y^2
y^2=2x^2
y=sqrt2x^2
y=xsqrt2
y=1.414x
The edge distance is 2x
1-(1.414x/2x)=1-.707=.293 or 29.3 % shorter distance.
