Question 221039: A farmer can plow a field in 4 days by using a tractor. A hired hand can plow the same field in 6 days by using a smaller tractor. How many days will be required for the plowing if they work together?
Answer by scott8148(6628) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
if X is their combined time, then the FRACTION that the farmer plows is X/4
___ and the FRACTION that the hired hand plows is X/6
___ the FRACTIONS add to 1 (the WHOLE field)
X/4 + X/6 = 1
multiplying by 12 (LCD) ___ 3X + 2X = 12 ___ 5X = 12 ___ X = 12/5 = 2.4 days
