Question 143343: Working together, Paul and Daniel can pick forty bushels of apples in 4.95 hours. Had he done it alone it would have taken Daniel 9 hours. Find how long it would take Paul to do it alone?
Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=amount of time it would take Paul working alone
Paul works at the rate of 40/x bu per hour
Daniel works at the rate of 40/9 bu per hour
And together they work at the rate of 40/4.95 bu per hour
So our equation to solve is:
40/x+40/9=40/4.95 multiply each term by 44.55x
40(44.55)+40(4.95)x=40(9)x simplify
1782+198x=360x subtract 198x from each side
1782+198x-198x=360x-198x collect like terms
1782=162x divide both sides by 162
x=11 hours--------------amount of time it would take Paul working alone
CK
40/11+40/9=40/4.95
(3.63636----)+(4.44444----)=(8.080808----)
8.080808---=8.080808---
Hope this helps---ptaylor
