Question 141335: The intake pipe can fill a tank in 4 hours when the outlet pipe is closed, but with the outlet pipe open it takes 6 hours. How long would it take the outlet pipe to empty a full tank?
Answer by scott8148(6628)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
in 6 hrs, the inlet pipe can fill the tank to 150% (6/4)
__ this means that 50% of the volume went through the outlet in 6 hrs
__ 50% in 6 hrs means it takes 12 hrs for the outlet to empty the tank

the equation __ let x="outlet time" __ 6/4-6/x=1

multiplying by 4x __ 6x-24=4x __ 2x=24 __ x=12
