Question 12408: Please help me with this word problem. There seems to be too many numbers and it's confusing me.Thanks a lot for helping me.I really appreciate it.

You work at a grocery store. Your hourly wage is greater after 6:00 p.m, than it is during the day. One week you work 20 daytime hours and 20 evening hours and earn $280. Another week you work 30 day time hours and 12 evening hours and earn a total of $276. What is your daytime rate? What is your evening rate?
Truly,
Kat

Answer by Earlsdon(6294)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let D = day time rate and E = evening rate.
and
Multiply the 1st equation by 3 and the 2nd equation by 2.
and
Now subtract the 2nd equation from the 1st equation.
Divide both sides by 36.
Substitute this into 2nd equation and solve for D.

Subtract 160 from both sides.
Divide both sides by 20.

Daytime rate is $6.00 per hour.
Evening rate is $8.00 per hour.
