Let x=time it takes winston to do the job.
x+1 timet it takes willie.
1/x portion of job done by winston in 1 hr.
1/(x+1) portion of job done by winston in 1 hr.
1/x+ 1/(x+1) =1/2
2(x+1)+2x=x(x+1)
2x+2+2x=x^2+x
x^2+x=4x+2
x^2-3x-2=0
x^2-3x =2
x^2-3x+2.25=2+2.25 Complete the square.
(x-1.5)^2=4.25
x-1.5=+-sqrt(4.25) sqrt of both sides.
x=1.5+-2.06155...
x=3.56... hrs it would take Winston working alone.
Check:
1/3.56...+ 1/4.56...=1/2...
