Tutors Answer Your Questions about Radicals (FREE)
Question 622116: I have to solve this equation with radicals and I am not sure if i just square both sides and then that removes the radicals and it becomes a normal equation. I think that's how to do it but for some reason I think there might be a different rule for when two radicals are on two sides of the equations. If you could help me with this and show work I would really appreciate it, this has me stumped.

Question 623719: Radicals
Answer the following questions. Use Equation Editor to write mathematical expressions and equations. If you do not use Equation Editor to properly format your responses, a 10% deduction will be assessed (3 points). First, save this file to your hard drive by selecting Save As from the File menu. Enter your answer in the space provided next to each problem. You must show work or offer an explanation of how you arrived at your answer for each problem in order to receive full credit. Please see the “Application Assignments and Grading Criteria” in the Main forum for detailed information about how the assignment is graded.
PART A
Marine biologists have set up stations along the shoreline of a large oil spill to clean birds affected by the spill. The cost to set up the cleaning station is $9800 and the cost of cleaning each bird is $9
PROBLEM SHOW YOUR SOLUTIONS HERE
1. Write an expression that gives the total cost of cleaning x birds.
2. You can find the average cost per bird by dividing the total cost by the number of birds. Write the expression for the average cost per bird. (The only variable in your expression should be x)
3. Find the average cost per bird to clean 500 birds, 50 birds and 5 birds
4. As the number of birds cleaned decreases, what happens to the average cost to clean each bird?
5. Would the average cost ever fall below $9? Why or why not? If you answered yes, identify a value that supports your answer.
6. If the organization has a budget of $13 per bird, how many birds can be cleaned?
[If your answer is a decimal, please round to the nearest whole number]
PART B
The cost, in millions of dollars, to remove x % of the oil in the sea is modeled by
PROBLEM SHOW YOUR SOLUTIONS HERE
1. What is the cost to remove 80% of the oil?
2. What is the cost to remove 95% of the oil?
3. What is the cost to remove 99% of the oil?
4. For what value is this equation undefined?
5. Provide an explanation of why it makes sense for the cost to undefined for the value found in #4, based on what you know about pollution.
PART C
To estimate the benefit of their cleanup efforts, biologists count the number of birds’ nests along the shoreline. The total number of nests is inversely proportional to the amount (in tons) of oil remaining.
PROBLEM SHOW YOUR SOLUTIONS HERE
1. Write an equation relating N (the number of nests found along the shoreline) to A (the amount of oil remaining). Use k to represent the constant of variation.
2. When there were 1000 tons of oil remaining from the spill, biologists counted 30 nests along the shoreline. Find the constant of variation k.
3. If the organization estimates that they will be able to clean up all but 75 tons of oil, how many nests should be along the shoreline when cleanup efforts are complete?
