Question 39600: This is a problem from a textbook that I just do not understand how to solve. I have been reading it over and over and still don't get it. Can you please help?
Sailboat speed. The sail area-displacement ratio S provides a measure of the sail power available to drive a boat. For a boat with a displacement of d pounds and a sail area of A square feet S = 16Ad^-2/3
a) Find s to the nearest tenth for the Tartan 4100, which has a sail area of 810 square feet and a displacement of 23,245 pounds.
b) Solve the formula for d.

Question 39705This question is from textbook college algebra
: Hi, I don't know how to draw the radical sign, but the problem in question is:
the radical 2x-5= 2 + the radical x-2
I know to isolate the radical to one side and raise it to the same power to eliminate the radical...my problem is in multiplying it out after that...

Question 37099This question is from textbook College Algebra
: A.
Is (square root x)^2=x an identity (true for all nonnegitive values of x)?
please explain answer
B. For the equation x-2sqrtx=0, perform the following:
solve for all values of x that satisfies the equation
answer & show work
C. graph the functions y=x and y=2 sqrt x on the same graph as B.(by plotting points if necessary) Show the points of intersection of these two graphs.
Also could you look at this? I think I have it right but I wanna double check
A right triangle is a triangle with one angle measuring 90 degrees. In a right triangle, the sides are related by Pythagorean Theorem, c^2=a^2+b^2, where c is the hypotenuse (the side opposite the 90 degree angle). Find the hypotenuse when the other two sides' measurements are 6 feet and 8 feet.
so heres what I have:
c^2=6^+8^2
c^2=36+64
sqrt c^2= sqrt 100 c= 5 sqrt 4This question is from textbook College Algebra

Question 39954: Please tell me if I'm doing this right!
The instructions are to simplify the radical expression.
The problem is (sqrt3 + 5)(sqrt3 - 3)
Using the foil method I come up with:
sqrt3 * sqrt3 -3sqrt3 + 5sqrt3 - 15
= 3 - 3sqrt3 + 5sqrt3 - 15
= -12 + 2sqrt3
Is this right and does it need (or can it be) simplified further?
Thanks

Question 39964: Help with this one please!
sqrt2y+7 + 4 = y
I think I have to start by isolating the y to one side - is that right, and then do I subtract the 4 from both sides to cancel it out on the left?
Please show me how to figure this!

Question 39955: I am having a hard time with my Algebra One class. I know this is a bad example of a question but I need help with Simplifying Radicals--Even Exponents and also adding, subtracting, and Multiplying Radicals. I don't know how to write you a question with the mathematical signs I need. I am having the most difficult year in school this year and I was wondering if there was any possible way you could help me out?
Thanks for your time.

Question 40531: Please help me solve this.
I need to find the altitude of a triangle.
The bottom is 10, the two sides going up to the point are 13. I cannot figure out how to do this.
I tried sqrt13^2 = sqrt13^2 + sqrt10^2
= 169 = 169 + 100
But I don't think this is right. I tried another problem similar to it that I have the correct answer to and I cannot come up with that answer so I know I'm not doing this one right. Please help!

Question 41011: Find the length x in each triangle. Express your answer in simplified radical form.
long side is 12
x is the straight side
8 is the bottom of the triangle
x2 = 122 + 82
= 144 + 64
= 208
This is completely wrong! where am I failing? I believe I am using the wrong formula. Help me.
