Question 161578: I am having a problem with an equation but cannot figure out how to find it. The problem is: 30^2 = ((s+7)(1.5))^2 + (2s)^2
The answer for "s" is 9. What am I doing wrong?
(30)(30) = ((1.5s)+(1.5)(7))^2 + (2s)(2s)
900 = (1.5s + 10.5)^2 + 4s^2
900 = ((1.5s)(1.5s)+ (10.5)(10.5)) + 4s^2
900 = 2.25s^2 + 110.25 + 4s^2
900 - 110.25 = 2.25s^2 +110.25-110.25 + 4s^2
789.75 = 6.25s^2
789.75/6.25 = 6.25s^2/6.25
126.36 = s^2
sqrt 126.36 = s ---sqrt 126.36 does not equal 9---

Question 161814: This isn't a very complicated radical question, but I don't understand it in any case.
√5 * √5
Is the answer just 5? or √5?
√5 * √10 Does this equal 3√5?
I realize that isnt one question but they're very short.
Thank you for your help.

Question 163137: Hi, this is the problem I was told to do:
[SQRT(2x + 2)] - [SQRT(x - 3)] = 2
or
√(2x+2) - √(x-3) = 2
I've been told to FOIL this problem, but I don't understand how to FOIL it if its subtracting and not multiplying. What I do know is that the answer is equal to 7.
Thanks in advance.

Question 163508: Here are a few problems that I am not sure if I got them right. Thanks. Paul
1) problem: square root of 3x + 9, - 12 = 0
square root of 3x + 9 = 12
(square root of 3x + 9)^2 = (12)^2
3x + 9 = 144
-9 -9
3x = 135
3x/3 = 135/3
answer: x = 45
2) problem: square root of 3x, - square root of 3x-5, = 1
1 - , square root of 3x = square root of 3x-5
(1 - square root of 3x)^2 = (square root of 3x-5)^2
1 - 2 square root of 3x - 3x = -3x-5
6 = 2 square root of 3x
(4)^2 = (square root of 3x)^2
16/3 = 3x/3
answer: x = 16/3 (I think this answer is 3 but not sure on how to get it)
3) problem: ^3 square root of x - 2, = 3
(^3 square root of x -2 ) = (3)^3
x - 2 = 27
answer: x = 29

Question 163811: The Schwarzschild radius describes the critical value to which the radius of a massive body must be reduced for it to become a black hole.
R = 2 G M / c 2
where
G = gravitational constant 6.7x10 -11
M= mass of the object
C = speed of light 3x10 8
The sun has M = 2x10 30 . What is the Schwarzschild radius for the sun? [Note its true radius is 700,000.]
