Question 148951: I need to simplify: -5+ the square root of 3 divided by 1 - the square root of 2. I believe the first step would be to elimate the radical from the denomenator so I would multiply by square root of 2 on the bottom and top. From there I am stuck.
I thought it would be: -5+ square root of 3 times the square root of 2, divided by 1 - the square root of 2 time the square root of 2. Which equals: -5square root of 2 + square root of 6 divided by -1. Where am i going wrong?

Question 148973: My homework question is:
The diagonal of a square measures 10 inches. What is the length of the sides?
I understand the Pythagorean theorem should be used here. Which would be 10^2=a^2+b^2
10^2 = the hypotenuse and
a^2 and b^2 would be the legs
the solutions I have to choose from are:
10Square root of 2 inches
5 inches
5square root of 2 inches
and 5 square root of 3 inches
The only one that seems reasonable would be 5 inches but I can't solve to find the legs.
Please help

Question 148978: My homework question is:
Solve (z+2)^-2/3=4
This is what I did:
2^-z/3 + 2^-2/3 = 3
[1/(z+2)^2/3]^3 = 3^3
1/(z+2)^2 = 27
1/2^2+4z+4 = 27
1= 27(z^2+4z+4)
1= 27z^2+108z+108
-1 from each side
27z^2+108z+107=0
From here I think Im supposed to factor but dont know what to do?

Question 149357: Two ranchers sold a herd of cattle and received as many dollars for each animal as there are animals in the herd. If there were two animals, they received $2 per animal; if there were three animals, they received $3 per animal; etc. As an example, if there were eight animals in the herd, the value of the herd would be $64 ($8 per animal times 8 animals in the herd). We’re told that they started with no more than 20 cattle.
With the money, they bought as many sheep as they could at $10 per head, and a goat with the remainder (less than $10). Finally they divided the animals between them. There was however, an odd number of sheep. So, one rancher took the extra sheep and the other the goat. The rancher who got the goat was given his friends new pocket knife as compensation. If this was to be an equal monetary division, what was the value of the pocketknife.
