Question 97111: Alrighty, here is the question, 6 _____ 3+ sqrt 5 , I know that you have to use the conjugates when the same # with the different sign in the middle, so it should then look like this 6 3-sqrt5 18 +6sqrt 5 __________*______ = 3+sqrt 5 3-sqrt 5 then I think you foil the denominator, and get (3+sqrt5)(3-sqrt5), and this = to 9+3-sqrt5+3+sqrt5, and sqrt -5 and sqrt 5=-25, =-5and the middle cancels out and leaves you with 9-5=4 but the answer in the back of book is 9-3sqrt5 _______ 2 how did they get that? thank you for your time. Question 98286: I think this is the category this problem falls under: (15.91) 1.96 -------- ("square root" 15) I don't know what to do, I'm pretty sure I would take the square root of 15 and times it by itself and the 15.91 and then that cancels out the bottom of the fraction. Then I have 1.96 (15.91) square root of 15. Then I would take the square root of 15, well that's where I get lost. I can't take anything out of 15 I dont think. I mean, I could take 6 out leaving 9 in? I know there's something like that, that I'm supposed to do. But I'm just not sure. Please help! Click here to see answer by checkley71(8403)
