Isolate one of the terms with a radical:



Square both sides:



To make things a little easier to see

Since we let  and let

Isolate the radical term (the 2x²'s and the 5x's will cancel)





Divide both sides by 2



Square both sides:



Get 0 on the left:



Factor the right side:



Use the zero-factor property:

2x+9=0;     x-2=0
  2x=-9       x=2
   x=

But we must check in the original equation, since radical 
equations often have extraneous answers:
