Question 83633: A ranger spots a forest fire while on a 45-meter observation tower. The angle of depression from the tower to the fire is 12 degrees. To the nearest meter, how far is the fire from the base of the tower?
Answer by vertciel(183) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
With trigonometry and geometry, it is wise to draw a diagram so you can better understand the problem.
I'll let you draw the diagram.
Since we have the angle and we are trying to find the adjacent side with respect to the angle, we will be using the tan ratio.
Tan = opp/adj
Tan12 = 45/Distance
Tan12(Distance) = 45
Distance = 45/Tan12
