solve this equation by completing the sqaure:
x^2+6x-40=0
x^2+6x+9-40-9=0
(x+3)^2=49
x+3 = 7 or x+3 = -7
x=4 or x=-10

move constant terms to right side ...
divide the coefficient of the x term by 2, square it, and add to both sides ...
factor the quadratic ...
take the square root of both sides ... x+3=7 and x+3=-7 ... so x=4 and x=-10
