When the sum of 648 and three times a positive number is subtracted from the square of the number, the result is 162. Find the number.
I tried to work through this but i ended up getting where i needed to square root a negative fraction, which isn't possible. Maybe i didn't write the equation right, but this is what i came up with from the question that's asked.
sqrt(x)-(648+3x)=162
NO! It's square, not SQUARE ROOT!!!
x² - (648 + 3x) = 162
Simplify then solve this as a quadratic. You will get
two answers, one is positive and one is negative. You
will discard the negative one and the positive answer
is the only solution.
