Question 734200: how do you simplify (-3 sqrt(-1000))? I am rather confused on how one is suppose to do this.
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
simplify (-3 sqrt(-1000))
-------
Factor -1000 into two factors where one is the largest possible perfect square.
That would be -100*10
----------------------------
= -3sqrt((-100)(10))
-------
Write as the product of the square roots:
= -3*sqrt(-100)*sqrt(10)
-------------------------------
Take the square root of the perfect square factor:
= -3*(10i)*sqrt(10)
---
Multiply:
= -30i*sqrt(10)
