These are not like terms so we cannot add them. Like radical terms have the same kinds of roots with the same radicands. ("Radicand" is the name for the expression inside a radical.)

But each of the square roots can be simplified:

With the square roots simplified we now have like terms, the first and last terms. So we can subtract them. We can subtract them exactly like 9x-5x = 4x:
