A long distance trucker traveled 160 miles in one direction during a snow storm.
The return trip in rainy weather was accomplished at double the speed and took 5 hours less time.
What is the speed going?
:
Let s = the speed in the snow
then
2s = in the rain
:
Write a time equation: time = dist/speed
:
to time - return time = 5 hrs
- = 5
mult by 2s
2(160) - 160 = 5(2s)
320 - 160 = 10s
160 = 10s
s = 16 mph in the snow (going)
and
32 mph in the rain
:
:
See if that checks out; find the time each way
160/16 = 10 hrs
160/32 = 5 hrs
---------------
time dif: 5 hrs
