but it is one.

(sqrt(x))^2 - 2sqrt(x) - 8 = 0

Factor:
(sqrt(x)-4)(sqrt(x)+2) = 0
---
sqrt(x) = 4 or sqrt(x) = -2
-------
x = 2 or x = i*sqrt(2)
