Question 391448: express the following expression as a single radical. x^3/4y^1/3
Answer by jsmallt9(3758) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The "trick" to this kind of problem is to rewrite the exponents with the same denominator. We do this because the denominator of a fractional exponent specifies the type of root. So if we get both the "x" and "y"to be both of the same kind of root we can put them both in the same kind of radical.
From your days of adding fractions it should be easy to figure out how to change 3/4 and 1/3 into fractions with the same denominator. So now we have:
Using the pattern . we can now write the expression with radicals:
Now we can use the property of radicals, , to multiply these two radicals. (We could not do this earlier because the property requires the same kind radicals.)
