Question 373608: This is from my MAT 117 Appendix C and I don't know how to begin. Can someone help me out please? Thanks in advance.
Many people know that the weight of an object varies on different planets, but did you know that the weight of an object on earth also varies according to the elevation of the object? In particular, the weight of an object follows this equation: , where C is a constant, and r is the distance that the object is from the center of the earth.
a. Solve the equation for C.
b. Suppose that an object is 280 pounds when it is at sea level. Find the value of C that makes the equation true. (Sea level is 3,963 miles from the center of the earth.)
c. Use the value of C you found in the previous question to determine how much the object would weigh in
i. Death Valley (214 feet below sea level)

Hi,
*Note: weight of an object with C being a constant
and r the distance from the center of the eaath is:
w = C/r^2
a) C = wr^2
b) C = 280 * 3963^2 = 4,397,503,320
c) w = 4,397,503,320/ (3749)^2 (3963-214 = 3749)
w = 312.878lbs, the amount the object would weigh in Death Valley
