x%5E2+%2B+5x+=+-3 Add 3 to both sides.
x%5E2+%2B+5x+%2B+3+=+0 Solve using the quadratic formula: x+=+%28-b%2B-sqrt%28b%5E2-4ac%29%29%2F2a For your equation, a = 1, b = 5, and c = 3
x+=+%28-5%2B-sqrt%285%5E2+-+4%281%29%283%29%29%29%2F2%281%29 Simplify.
x+=+%28-5%2B-sqrt%2825-12%29%29%2F2

This would fit your answer C) if you had used parentheses around the numerator , thus:
