squaring ___ y^2 - 4y + 4 = y + 4

subtracting (y+4) ___ y^2 - 5y = 0

factoring ___ y(y - 5) = 0

y = 0

y - 5 = 0 ___ y = 5

Collect like terms on the left:



Now just solve the quadratic. You will get two roots, but one or both may be extraneous. Check both. Note is the POSITIVE square root.
