Question 282305:
Answer by PeltierC(1) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Hello, when calculating the square root of a number that has no easy root(like 25 or 36, which solution are 5 and 6, respectively) you can change the number into numbers which have easy roots. For example 8 = 4x2 right? So sqrt(8)=sqrt(4x2). Note that by sqrt I mean square root. Now you can factor out the easy roots. The square root of 4 is easy. What times itself equals 4? 2 does. So you can pull the 4 out of the square root by making it a 2. Please note that this ONLY works with multiplication! If it were sqrt(4+2) the answer would not be the same! So now that we pull the 4 out we have 2sqrt(2). Since the square root of 2 isn't a simple number we'll just leave it there. The final answer will be 2sqrt(2).
