d = 1.3 sqrt h, where h is the height in feet above the surface. How high (to the nearest foot) would a platform have to be to see a distance of 13.5 miles?
------------------------
13.5 = 1.3*sqrt(h)
sqrt(h) = 13.5/1.3
h = (13.5/1.3)^2
h = 108 feet
-------------------
knightowltutor converted from miles to feet, but the eqn says d is in miles.

Distance is 13.5 miles
Height of platform=h in feet
We need to convert distance into feet
1 mile=5280 feet
13.5 miles*5280 feet/1mile=71,280 feet
the equation to be solved is
71,280=1.3(h)sqroot
Divide both sides by 1.3
54,830.769=hsqrt
Square both sides
3,006,413,254.4 =h
3,006,413,254 feet=h
If you are using a nautical mile you need to convert the miles by multiply by 6076 feet and replace 5280.
