We want to isolate the square root.
So, add 2 to both sides.
We now have this:
sqrt{x + 2} = x + 2
To remove the square root symbol, square both sides.
Doing so, we get this:
x + 2 = x^2 + 4x + 4
x^2 + 4x - x + 4 - 2 = 0
x^2 + 3x + 2 = 0
Factor this quadratic equation.
(x + 1) (x + 2) = 0
Set each factor to zero and solve for x.
x + 1 = 0
x = -1
