SOLUTION: Please explain the steps for each example Here's my first example: (8/7) divided by (16/35) = (8 / 7) * ( 35 / 16) = (8 / 7) * ( 7 * 5 / 8 * 2) = (== / ==) * ( ==* 5

Question 146943: Please explain the steps for each example
Here's my first example:
(8/7) divided by (16/35)
= (8 / 7) * ( 35 / 16)
= (8 / 7) * ( 7 * 5 / 8 * 2)
= (== / ==) * ( ==* 5 / ==* 2)
= 5/2
Here's my second example:
(x - 8)/(x + 2) divided by (x^2 - 9x + 8)/(x^2 - 4)
= (x - 8) / (x + 2) * (x^2 - 4) / (x^2 - 9x + 8)
= (x - 8) / (x + 2) * (x - 2)(x + 2)/(x - 8)(x - 1)
= ( === ) / ( === ) * (x - 2)( === )/( === )(x - 1)
= (x - 2) / (x - 1)
what is similar between the two examples.
Thank you very much

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Both examples follow the same steps. When you divide by a fraction you multiply by its reciprocal, so you have to flip the second fraction. The next step is factoring out the large numbers (on the right side, in these cases) as low as possible, so you can cancel things out. Once you see common expressions across the fractions, you can cross them out and whatever is left is your answer.
