Question 119982: I have a homework problem where we are asked to find the perimeter of a triangle, simple enough. But, after finding that one of the sides was a square root, I did not know how to add it to the two other sides, which were whole numbers.
12+24+12radical3

Answer by bucky(2189)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You add the 12 and the 24 to get 36. You can't combine that with the radical term. So the answer
to this problem is that the perimeter P of this triangle is:
.

.
And that's all you can do with it unless you want to find a "just about" answer. You could do
that by using a calculator to find the square root of 3. Then multiply that square root by 12.
Once you get that answer you add 36 and you get the answer of:
.

.
But that's not the exact answer. It's very, very, very close to exact. The more accurate answer is:
.

.
You were right ... you can't add the radical term directly to the integers.
.
Hope this helps you to understand the problem ...
