\sqrt(5-x)=x+1

Solve For X:

square both sides

FOIL (x+1)(x+1)
5 - x = x^2 + 2x + 1
0 = x^2 + 2x + x + 1 - 5
A quadratic equation
x^2 + 3x - 4 = 0
Factors to
(x+4)(x-1) = 0
two solutions
x = -4, we don't want the square root of a negative number
therefore
x = 1 is the only solution
