x - 2*sqrt(x) - 6 = 0

Using the quadratic formula you get:
sqrt(x) = [2 +- sqrt[4-4*-6]/2

sqrt(x) = [2+- sqrt(28)]/2

sqrt(x) = [1 +- sqrt(7)]

x = (1+sqrt(7))^2 or x = (1-sqrt(7))^2
